Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary, Ameren Corporation
2013 Fellow

Chonda Nwamu joined Ameren in 2016 and became General Counsel in 2019. She was previously Senior Director and Managing Counsel at Pacific Gas & Electric Company, where she was an LCLD Fellow, and spent time in private practice at a commercial litigation firm in Philadelphia. Chonda also serves on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater St. Louis and was appointed by the Mayor of St. Louis to serve as a City Commissioner on the St. Louis Zoological Park Subdistrict Commission.

Chonda is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the legal profession; in 2020 she spoke about the importance of diversity in the legal profession as part of Bloomberg's Black General Counsel Project. "As more Black lawyers become GCs, they often serve as role models and mentors to women and diverse attorneys in their organizations, leading to improved retention of diverse talent and a more robust succession pipeline for leadership," she said.

As part of LCLD's Leaders at the Front initiative, Chonda created a Leader's Pledge detailing her personal and organizational commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Read Chonda's pledge here

Under Chonda's leadership, Ameren tracks its spending with diverse-owned law firms and diverse attorneys at majority law firms, and has a training program for diverse attorneys that are unfamiliar with the specialty area of energy regulation. Diversity initiatives for the company as a whole include employee resource groups, a supplier diversity program, and diversity training and leadership programs.
