Chief Legal Officer, Head of Public Affairs, and Head of Enterprise Diversity, Truist Financial Corporation
Ellen Fitzsimmons was named CLO of Truist Financial in December 2019. Prior to the merger between BB&T Corporation and SunTrust Banks, Inc., she served as Corporate Executive Vice President and General Counsel of SunTrust. In both 2019 and 2020, she was named to American Banker’s annual Most Powerful Women in Banking “Women to Watch” list. As part of her role at Truist, Ellen oversees companywide diversity and inclusion functions. “No company or community can flourish without diverse perspectives being shared and respected always,” she says. “We believe that every voice must be heard—both in and outside our walls.”
Truist’s Board of Directors is 45% racially, ethnically, or gender diverse, and the company has increased the diversity of their senior leadership roles from 12% to 15% in three years. Among Truist’s many efforts to advance DE&I, the company also holds ongoing pay equity reviews, and both of the company’s heritage organizations received perfect scores on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2020 Corporate Equality Index.
