Professor Jane Hong will present on the recent surge in AAPI hate and xenophobia, contextualize these events as part of the AAPI experience in the United States, and discuss AAPI community responses.

Professor Hong is associate professor of history at Occidental College and the author of Opening the Gates to Asia: A Transpacific History of How America Repealed Asian Exclusion. Hong is currently writing a book about race and evangelical politics.
Professor Hong has led k-12 teacher seminars for the Gilder-Lehman Institute of American History, consulted for television programs including Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and American Idol, and penned op-eds for the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Hong appeared in two episodes of the PBS docu-series, Asian Americans. She regularly leads trainings on AAPI histories, most recently for Uber. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Northern New Jersey, Hong received her Ph.D. in history from Harvard and her B.A. from Yale.
