San Diego Alumni Month of Service

Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2023
Time: 10:00 AM PST - 2:00 PM PST
Location: Casa Cornelia Law Center (2760 Fifth Ave #200, San Diego, CA 92103)

Casa Cornelia is bringing back limited screening clinics, where their staff attorneys will visit a school for at-risk youth to share a know-your-rights presentation and a screening clinic for 14-24 year olds. The first hour will be a training for volunteers, followed by screening interviews of one or two youths per volunteer attorney and ending with a collaborative session for questions and recommendations. At least one staff member will be present throughout the screening clinic to answer any questions that arise.

With this population, attorneys will be screening for mostly U-Visas or T-Visas (possibly VAWA) and special immigrant juvenile status. The training will provide an overview of the legal requirements for each potential basis for relief and there will be a detailed screening form to guide the interviews. There is no expectation that any of the volunteer screeners would take on the youth's case should they become a client of Casa Cornelia (although it would be welcomed if desired).
