Erika Schoenberger
General Counsel, Vice President — The Davey Tree Expert Company
I, Erika Schoenberger, personally commit to the following:
Personal Commitment
- I will use my voice as a leader in my organization and the profession to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the legal profession, throughout my organization, in my community, and beyond.
- I will continue to lead by example, even when it is uncomfortable, challenging biases and other discriminatory behaviors that I observe, seeking to cultivate an inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued, respected, and supported.
- I will meet with my organization’s diverse lawyers to discuss their experiences at our organization; be informed of and address potential issues; meaningfully plan and track their professional development and advancement goals; identify stretch opportunities for them; and generally serve as a trusted mentor and/or sponsor.
- I will simply listen. I will truly hear diverse individuals when they share their experiences and perspectives, with a goal of continuing to expand my personal understanding of DEI issues and how to help move the needle forward.
- I will meet with my Company’s outside counsel relationship partners to engage in dialogue regarding my specific DEI expectations and hold them accountable as they work to meet those expectations.
Organizational Commitment
- At Davey, we believe in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. It has been and shall continue to be both the official policy and the commitment of Davey to further equal employment opportunities for all persons.
- Davey is committed to building a culture of belonging by treating everyone with respect, dignity, empathy, and care. We understand that encouraging diverse ideas and perspectives is critical to achieving our vision and mission, and we build this culture by living our values, evolving, and learning together. Davey has a formal committee dedicated to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives (the JEDI Committee). The JEDI Committee is a cross-functional committee including operational and support members from around North America, and it is led by an executive sponsor. The committee is part of Davey’s Strategic Plan, is supported by an annual budget, and is included in a report to Davey’s Board of Directors. The JEDI Committee develops specific goals and priorities each year. In 2023, its goals and priorities are related to recruiting, training, and supporting diverse communities and organizations.
- Davey also has a formalized policy and provides financial support for Employee Affinity Groups (EAGs).
- Davey works with disadvantaged businesses as subcontractors and vendors on a consistent basis.
- Davey provides training for employees on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Employment Law.
- In a field that has been dominated by men, Davey is also seeking to increase diversity and inclusivity through a women’s tree climbing training program and women’s career workshop. Davey’s training programs for women are taught by women and tailored to the strengths and learning styles of women. Davey aims to provide women with a safe and supportive environment where they can build confidence and feel empowered.
