I, Shannon Smith, personally commit to the following:

Personal Commitment

  • Continue providing in-house diversity training with ABA recommended DEI materials.
  • Hire to grow the percentage of diverse attorneys and the number of diverse attorneys in firm leadership roles.
  • Enhance connections so everyone feels they have a voice and opportunity by conducting regular meetings with attorneys and interns to ascertain how people can expand their networks both within the firm and outside the firm.
  • Identify, curtail, and altogether remove barriers within the firm that stand in the way of enhancing DEI efforts.
  • Create and maintain strategic community partnerships with legal organizations that promote and enhance DEI initiatives.
  • Provide forums and avenues for the exchange of ideas that promote DEI awareness.

Organizational Commitment

  • Continue supporting organizations such as the Cranbrook Institute of Science Women Rock Science program, which helps sponsor STEAM education opportunities for underprivileged students throughout Michigan.
  • Provide coaching programs to parents returning from leave.
  • Continue additional training for new attorneys and interns, particularly with respect to cognitive biases in legal decision making.
  • Enhance mental-health related benefits, including continuing to subsidize therapy costs for individuals dealing with trauma.
  • Maintain a flexible and independent work environment, while understanding that through the support of each other and the organizations we work with every day, we can obtain transformational scientific and cultural progress that transcends each of us individually.

Make a move,
join the movement.
