2011 Annual Meeting: Resource Guide
For those who missed the 2011 Annual Meeting-or wish to have a record of it for reference-we've posted a number of resources on the LCLD web site for your convenience. You can find a video of highlights from the meeting here. On our main Annual Meeting web page, you'll find a selection of meeting photographs and materials such as the BUILD IT activity cards and our new summary of legal diversity surveys, LCLD TrendLines. Soon you'll also be able to view the speakers' presentations, including Committee Chair reports and remarks from our keynote speakers. We'll also post these highlights in other places, including the Resources and Committees sections of the Members web site.
Robert Grey on the Courage of our Convictions
Robert Grey's new Open Minded blog posting examines the power of conviction expressed by the headline speakers at this year's Annual Meeting, and pays special tribute to the late Derrick A. Bell, a man who promoted diversity within the legal profession by living the courage of his convictions. Read it here, comment, and share with your friends and associates.
LCLD's Smith Honored by White House
Brad Smith, General Counsel of Microsoft and LCLD Board member, was honored as aChampion of Change by the White House for his pro bono work with unaccompanied minors, many of them orphans or kids left behind when their parents were deported from the U.S. To "defend those who need it most," Smith founded an organization, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), enlisted the help of Angelina Jolie, and created a network of several thousand lawyers who have provided pro bono legal services to more than 3,100 children since 2008. KIND's youngest client was only two years old.
Teri McClure Named "Transformative Leader"
Teri McClure, General Counsel of United Parcel Service, was honored with Inside Counsel magazine's Transformative Leader Award for 2011. In the magazine's October issue, Teri praises her fellow honorees and thanks the people in her life "who were willing to take risks to provide me with opportunities that may have been outside of my immediate focus area." The great thing about Teri, an LCLD Board member, is that she also pays it forward.
Careers in Motion
Two LCLD Fellows have made exciting moves recently. Vanessa Allen Sutherlandaccepted the challenge of public service, and is leaving her position at Altria for a White House appointment as Chief Counsel, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. LCLD Fellow Derek Harris, of Carleton Fields in Atlanta, was named co-Chair of the ABA's Diversity Initiatives subcommittee. And in another upward move, Sarah (Sally) Olson becomes Chief Diversity Officer at Sidley Austin LLP. Congratulations to all!
Welcome New Members
Please welcome two new LCLD Members in the month of October: Timothy Hester, Managing Partner of Covington & Burling LLP, based in Washington, D.C.; and Brett Hart, General Counsel of United Airlines.
