A Quote to Consider

"Diversity talk in America today is superficial and largely tactical . . . We can no longer afford the luxury of intellectual laziness but must think more deeply and systematically about what diversity means, how it should be managed, and how law and other social processes can best contribute to that endeavor."

- Peter Schuck (Professor Emeritus of Law and Adjunct Professor at Yale Law School). Quoted by Eli Wald, professor of legal ethics at the University of Denver Sturm School of Law, in "A Primer on Diversity, Discrimination, and Equality in the Legal Profession or Who is Responsible for Pursuing Diversity and Why," (2011)

In Appreciation: John Payton, Civil Rights Figure

The Board of Directors of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity notes with sadness the passing on March 22 of attorney John Payton, 65, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

From a statement by President Barack Obama:

"A true champion of equality, John Payton helped protect civil rights in the classroom and at the ballot box. The legal community has lost a legend, and while we mourn John's passing, we will never forget his courage and fierce opposition to discrimination in all its forms."
