Speakers Set for September Annual Meeting

The Third Annual LCLD Members Meeting will be held September 13 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. There will be a reception for Members hosted by the LCLD Board of Directors the night before at the hotel's CityZen restaurant.

This one-day meeting features two of the most prominent experts on the subject of talent in the legal profession.

Bob Nelson is director of the American Bar Foundation and professor of sociology and law at Northwestern University. His current research includes an in-depth study of diversity in leading organizations in the profession and a study of the careers of lawyers, including tracking the entering bar class of 2000 for the first ten years of their careers.

Jerry Kang is professor of law at UCLA School of Law and professor Asian American studies at UCLA. He brings particular expertise in the area of communications and implicit bias.

Of great importance will be the opportunity-unique to LCLD-to have candid discussions with peers about all aspects of recruiting, advancing, and retaining diverse talent, benefiting your organization and the profession as a whole.

With the continuing growth in Membership of the LCLD over the past year, expect a very strong turnout. Your participation is critical to the success of this meeting. Please make every effort to attend.

San Francisco Regional Meetings on August 8

On August 8, LCLD, with the help of co-hosts Brad Smith and Laura Stein, will host a regional meeting to discuss Changing the Talent Trajectory at the San Francisco Ritz Carlton. There will also be a meeting of local diversity professionals and LCLD Fellows on August 8.

Job Mobility

Job mobility has become the "new normal" for young attorneys. After the JD2, a report authored by the American Bar Foundation's Dr. Robert Nelson and colleagues, reports that 62% of young attorneys changed jobs at least once between 2003 and 2007, with slightly more than half reporting a move from one practice setting to another (not just a move to a different organization in the same practice setting). Dr. Nelson will be sharing fresh statistics and insights into talent and diversity at the September annual meeting.

Individual Mentoring Program Seeks New Mentors

LCLD is excited to launch the second round of the Individual Mentoring Program (IMP) in fall 2012. The IMP, which falls under the Pipeline Committee's Success in Law School Program, launched its first round in January 2012 and over a 4-month period matched more than 700 volunteer mentor attorneys with an equal number of diverse 1L students at law schools in 25 cities around the United States. We're exceptionally pleased with our progress and hope to repeat our success in the second round of the program.

All LCLD members who did not participate in the first round of the IMP received enrollment information in early July in the hopes that they would lead the way during the second round. Program Director, Sarah Wintle, is in the process of forwarding enrollment materials to all returning participants, both to verify their current participation and to inquire about any additional attorneys within their organization who may want to participate.

Media Tracks the 1L Scholars Program

Both the National Law Journal and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin emphasized in their recent coverage of the June 2012 1L LCLD Scholars Retreat in Chicago the exceptional growth of the program. As the NLJ's Karen Sloan pointed out, this young program has "nearly tripled" in size since its launch just one year ago. Kudos to 1L Scholars Committee Chair Laura Stein and to Pipeline Committee Chair Brad Smith for their good work on this initiative.
