Annual Meeting: Peeling Back the Numbers
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of LCLD's upcoming annual meeting is the chance not only to gain fresh insights from experts in the field of legal diversity, but also for GCs and MPs to have the opportunity to consider those insights thoughtfully and candidly in small discussions throughout the day.
Two speakers-Bob Nelson of the American Bar Foundation and Jerry Kang of the UCLA School of Law-will share their groundbreaking research and help LCLD members hammer out actionable strategies from the research findings.
Here are just three stats certain to command attendees' attention at the Sept. 13 meeting:
- 55% - 2011 law school shut-out rate for African-American applicants
(percentage denied admission to any law school) - 62% - Young attorneys who changed jobs at least once between 2003 and
2007 (Job mobility is being called "the new normal.") - 15 - The number of women of color general counsels in Fortune 500
(3%), in 2012
'Rooney Rule'/Inclusion Impact Program Update
The Partnerships & Teams Committee is proud to present the LCLD Rooney Rule / Inclusion Impact Program. In a nutshell, by requiring that minority and women candidates at least be considered (along with others) for leadership positions, the potential is there for greater diversity in the legal profession over the long haul. Women Lawyers of Color Panel Held
After attending this year's 1L LCLD Scholars Retreat, June 19-20 in Chicago, many of our women 1L Scholars expressed an interest in connecting with women lawyers of color in the industry and discussing success strategies for working at law firms or corporations. As a result, Laura Stein, Committee Chair for the 1L LCLD Scholars Program, held a conference call for all female 1L LCLD Scholars on July 24, 2012.
One hundred seventeen female Scholars from 2011 and 2012 were invited to participate in a candid discussion about the unique challenges women attorneys of color face in our profession. Laura moderated a panel of talented women leaders from the legal industry including: Genhi Bailey (Directory of Diversity at DLA Piper), Sandy Chamblee (Partner at Steptoe & Johnson), Joan Haratani (Partner at Morgan Lewis), and Kim Rivera (Chief Legal Officer at DaVita). Topics of discussion included mentor relationships, work/life balance, and navigating careers. The hour- long discussion was a forum for young, female attorneys to hear inspiring lessons of wisdom, ask questions, and have candid discussions.
