2013 LCLD Fellows are the Largest Class Yet!
LCLD is excited to announce that Members have selected 167 Fellows for the class of 2013! This year's class represents 141 LCLD Member organizations. Our largest class yet, the 2013 class increases the existing network of Fellows to a total of 422 diverse, high-potential attorneys. We greatly appreciate your strong support of the LCLD Fellows Program and we look forward to working with your Fellows this year and beyond!
City Leads Needed in Select Cities for Success in Law School Mentoring Program
The LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program is in need of City Leads for both the Individual Mentoring Program (IMP) and the Group Mentoring Program (GMP) in several cities around the country. The purpose of the City Lead is to serve as the primary, local liaison between LCLD and local law school students and administration as well as attorney mentors in their city. The City Lead should be familiar with the local legal community and be comfortable supporting and advocating for the LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program. City Leads are needed in the following cities:
- Baltimore
- Cincinnati
- Columbus (IMP only)
- Hartford
- Minneapolis
- Pittsburgh
- San Diego
- San Francisco
This year, LCLD is holding the first City Lead Focus Group and Training for new and returning City Leads on April 11, 2013. The goal of the training is to ensure that Mentors and Mentees across the country get the most from the LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program. If you would like more information, or if you or someone in your organization are interested in serving as City Lead, please email Sarah Wintle.
1L LCLD Scholars Program--It's Not Too Late!
There is still time to make your commitment to the 2013 1L LCLD Scholars Program, an initiative designed to strengthen the legal pipeline by expanding the number of opportunities for diverse first-year law students. To date, 80 LCLD Member organizations have confirmed that they will host 1L LCLD Scholars this summer. See below for more information about the 1L LCLD Scholars Program:

Southern California Fellows Host Inaugural LCLD Southern California Reception

LCLD Fellows from the 2011 and 2012 classes in Southern California hosted an inaugural reception February 12, 2013. "The Southern California Fellows wanted to announce to the local corporate community that LCLD is here, growing, and looking to expand the number of Members to help advance LCLD's mission by inviting General Counsel from prominent Southern California companies to come out for this inaugural 'get acquainted' reception," said Ronald Wood, 2012 LCLD Fellow and Partner at Proskauer Rose LLP in Los Angeles. The reception, held at Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, was a great success, as the Fellows mingled with lawyers from such companies and institutions as Southern California Edison, 20th Century Fox, Yahoo, Inc., Paramount Studios, and UCLA Law School.
The Fellows were also honored to have Robert Grey, Executive Director of LCLD, in attendance at the reception. "The Southern California Fellows took the initiative to organize the reception in Los Angeles for area Fellows and the general counsel of potential LCLD Members," said Mr. Grey. "Their leadership effort is a perfect example of the commitment and willingness to use their contacts to help expand LCLD's network in California."
Southern California Fellows viewed the reception as an initial step in both increasing the membership in LCLD by Southern California companies and fostering greater cohesion and networking opportunities among Southern California in-house and law firm lawyers. Mr. Wood added, "We look forward to planning additional events and working with Robert and LCLD staff to keep knocking on doors until every corporation of any size, from Santa Barbara to San Diego, knows who we are, where we and LCLD are headed, and has a diverse roster of outside counsel serving their needs."
Register to Attend Professor Jerry Kang's Implicit Bias Meeting or Live Webcast
We invite LCLD Members to attend a meeting in San Francisco and live webcast onBuilding Competitive Teams: A Look At Implicit Bias, May 3, 2013 from 9 am - 12 pm PDT. UCLA School of Law Professor Jerry Kang will lead us in a discussion examining Implicit Bias and how it impacts building competitive teams in our organizations. LCLD has partnered with the Practising Law Institute to apply for CLE credit for the meeting. Please express interest in participating in either the in-person meeting or live webcast, or contact Louise Bald if you have questions.

Three LCLD affiliates have been recognized by the InsideCounsel Transformative Leadership Awards (TLA) program. Roderick A. Palmore, who is the LCLD Founder and immediate past Chair of the Board of Directors in addition to his position as Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Chief Compliance and Risk Management Officer of General Mills, Inc., has been honored with a TLA named after him--the Roderick Palmore Pathmaker Award. This award given to a leader who has carved a path to accelerating diversity in law firms.
Denise F. Keane, who is Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Altria Group, Inc. and a Member of the LCLD Board of Directors, will be honored with the TLA Sharing the Power Award, along with Elizabeth P. Papez, Partner at LCLD Member organizationWinston & Strawn. This joint award is for a law department and a law firm that have collaborated to increase the economic empowerment of female partners in that firm.
Sarah E. Moss, an LCLD Member and Executive Vice President and General Counsel at The Estee Lauder Companies, Inc., will be honored with the TLA Anastasia D. Kelly Award, which recognizes a General Counsel who has sustained a commitment to advancing women throughout her career.

John W. Daniels, Jr., Chairman of Quarles & Brady LLP and Member of the LCLD Board of Directors, was honored with the prestigious Presidential Legacy Award by theNational Bar Association on January 19, 2013 at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. The Presidential Legacy Award is bestowed to individuals for exceptional achievements in civic, entrepreneurial, or professional endeavors. William E. Neukom, who is Founder and CEO of the World Justice Project, a Life Leadership Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, former General Counsel of Microsoft, and a past President of the American Bar Association, has donated $750,000 to the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation's (ABF) Pursuing the Promise campaignfor the creation of a research chair at the ABF dedicated to the study of diversity and law. The new chair will anchor a program of research on emerging questions of diversity and law in the contexts of legal practice, legal education, globalization, technology, and the fiscal crisis of the courts. This gift will establish the William H. Neukom Fellows Research Chair in Diversity and Law at the ABF and will be only the second endowed research chair in the ABF's 60 year history. Mr. Neukom's gift places The ABF Fellows within $150,000 of the $1.5 million goal for the endowment of the new research chair. Mr. Neukom will be a speaker at the LCLD Fellows Retreat in San Francisco, May 10-12, 2013.
