Each year, our Members handpick diverse emerging leaders from their organizations to participate in a yearlong series of initiatives focused on personal branding, relationship building, the art of networking, and advanced leadership skills.

Register Your Organization to Participate in the 2014 1L Scholars Program
The 1L LCLD Scholars Program offers talented, diverse first-year law students the opportunity to work side-by-side with attorneys at LCLD Member law firms and corporate legal departments. These 1L Scholars have the opportunity to attend the 2014 1L LCLD Scholars Retreat to build leadership skills and network with other 1L Scholars, and to be paired with a 2014 LCLD Fellow as a mentor. Your organization controls the individual hiring criteria and there are opportunities for partnering with other LCLD Member organizations.

Third Annual LCLD Fellows Alumni Retreat, May 2014

A committee of LCLD Fellows has been busy over the last several months planning the Third Annual LCLD Fellows Alumni Retreat in Miami, Florida. The retreat will take place May 15-18, 2014 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. With more than 430 Fellows Alumni, the committee anticipates that one-third of the alumni, plus their significant others, will attend. The retreat will bring together the Fellows classes of 2011, 2012, and 2013 in one central location to network and learn from proven leaders that will speak to the group.
This year's retreat hopes to exceed the high standards of last year's retreat. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in a community service event, gain insight from a panel of General Counsel from a local professional sports team, and network with Fellows through small group activities and practice group breakout sessions.

Best Wishes to Sarah Wintle
It's with great sadness that we announce that Sarah Wintle, who has been with LCLD's Success in Law School Mentoring Program since its inception, will be leaving LCLD to focus more fully on her family's alternative energy business, Exeter Agri-Energy. We are very sad to see her go, but excited about Exeter Agri-Energy's success. In her time with LCLD, Sarah has grown the LCLD mentoring program into the largest 1L law school mentoring program in the United States. We hope you join us in wishing Sarah the best in her future endeavors!
Starting January 1, 2014, Louise Bald will assume program management duties for the mentoring program. Previously, Louise worked with the LCLD Partnerships & Teams Committee and she is very excited about continuing to grow and support the work of LCLD.
Meet Louise Bald: Three Questions for the New LCLD Mentoring Program Manager
Starting January 1, 2014, Louise Bald, will succeed Sarah Wintle as the LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program Manager. Louise will also manage the 1L LCLD Scholars Program. Until then, Louise Bald will continue to manage LCLD Fellows Learning Experiences and Leadership Lunches.

How long have you been working for LCLD? I started working for LCLD in April 2012. At that time I was responsible for managing the Leadership Lunch and Learning Experience Programs, both of which were new to LCLD. Now, I'm transitioning into a role with responsibility for both the Success in Law School Mentoring Program and the 1L Scholars Program. I'm excited to make this transition because my work with LCLD allows me to be surrounded by intelligent, passionate, and inspirational people.

What are you looking forward to in your new role with the Success in Law School Mentoring Program and the 1L Scholars Program? One of my personal core values is to always give back. To me, these programs are an excellent way to incorporate this core value into my professional environment. I always aspired to work for a cause I believed in, and every day I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to do so!

What's one interesting fact people might not know about you? My father is from Nebraska, my mother is from Oxford, England, and yet I ended up with a touch of a Southern twang! I look forward to learning more about y'all!

Brad Smith, General Counsel and Senior Vice President, Legal and Corporate Affairs at Microsoft; and LCLD Board Chair, was recently featured in The American Lawyer magazine in an article explaining why law schools need to help their students pass the bar.
Teri P. McClure, Chief Legal, Communications, and Compliance Officer of UPS; and LCLD Board Treasurer, was featured in an article in Bloomberg Businessweek about the speech she delivered to an audience at the Council of Urban Professionals' fourth annual Lawyers Forum. During the forum, leaders discussed ways to meet diversity challenges in the legal profession.
Quarles & Brady has established an ongoing scholarship through the American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund in honor of the firm's Chairman Emeritus, John W. Daniels, Jr., who is an LCLD Board Member. Funds donated in honor of Daniels will "advance diversity in the legal profession by providing financial support to deserving students who would not otherwise be able to achieve their career goals." Mark D. Roellig, LCLD Board Member and EVP and General Counsel of MassMutual Life Insurance Co., was interviewed by Diversity & the Bar magazine about the importance of diverse talent in the legal profession.
William J. Simonitsch, 2012 LCLD Fellow and Partner, K&L Gates, has been elected President of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and will begin his term November 9, 2013. Read Simonitsch's bio or learn more about the NAPABA elections.
Haynes and Boone, an LCLD Member law firm, was awarded the Minority Corporate Counsel Association's prestigious Thomas L. Sager Award for the South Region. The award, which is the namesake of LCLD Member Thomas L. Sager, SVP and General Counsel of DuPont Legal, recognizes Haynes and Boone's commitment to the "hiring, retention, and promotion of minority lawyers."
Hogan Lovells, an LCLD Member law firm, was honored by Dell Inc. with its 2013 Dell Legal Diversity Award. Dell's legal team from the Americas recognized Hogan Lovells during a luncheon on September 24, 2013 in Austin, TX.
