LCLD Members and Fellows Discuss Recent Leadership Lunches

Since the program's inception in September 2012, over 40 LCLD Members have spoken at LCLD Leadership Lunches. These intimate lunches, attended by 10-15 Fellows, provide an opportunity for one General Counsel and one Managing Partner to share their personal journeys, as well as insight into how diversity and inclusion are integrated into their respective organizations. The feedback from these events has been overwhelmingly positive.

One recent lunch was hosted by Starbucks in Seattle, WA. The lunch began with a coffee cupping, which is the practice of observing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee. LCLD Fellows then sat down to lunch with Lucy Helm, General Counsel for Starbucks, and Charles Riley, Managing Partner of Lane Powell.

Another Leadership Lunch was hosted in Washington, D.C. Carter Phillips, of Sidley Austin, and Kirkland Hicks, of Towers Watson, spoke at the lunch. As James Commons, a 2013 Fellow from McDermott Will & Emery, remarked, "I thoroughly enjoyed the November 12th Leadership Lunch in Washington, D.C. Both of the luncheon speakers shared insightful comments on the defining characteristics of an effective leader and offered their perspectives on navigating the rigorous demands of the legal profession. Although the luncheon lasted only an hour, the speakers made excellent use of their time and were able to impart knowledge on a variety of pertinent topics."

The most recent Leadership Lunch was hosted by Holland & Knight at their Miami office. Charles Joseph, General Counsel for Florida Blue, was one of the speakers for this lunch. Following the lunch, he commented, "The Fellows are a highly talented group and LCLD is fortunate to have them and their respective organizations as members helping to advance diversity in the legal profession. Although Florida Blue has only been a member for less than two years, we are glad to be a part of this important work and remain committed to helping drive it."

The next Leadership Lunch will be hosted by Southern California Edison and Baker & McKenzie in Rosemead, CA on December 12, 2013.

If you are interested in speaking at a Leadership Lunch in 2014, please email leadershiplunch@lcldnet.com.
