2014 Fellows Class Largest in LCLD History

 

LCLD's Talent Development Committee is proud to announce that 181 attorneys have been selected as 2014 LCLD Fellows. They join the classes of 2011, 2012, and 2013 as participants in one of most comprehensive legal talent development programs in the country. This is the largest class of Fellows yet for LCLD, which launched in 2011 with a class of 119.

The 2014 Fellows will have their first in-person meeting in Dallas, March 21-23, 2014, to begin their year-long Fellowship. They will have opportunities to network with the 2013 Fellows, who will meet in Dallas for their graduation meeting, March 20-22, 2014.

Brad Smith, LCLD Board Chair and General Counsel of Microsoft, and Microsoft's Department of Legal and Corporate Affairs were honored with the Pro Bono Institute's (PBI) 2014 Laurie D. Zelon Pro Bono Award for their outstanding commitment to pro bono legal services. The team was presented with the award on March 6 at the PBI Annual Conference Reception at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.

Bill Simonitsch, 2012 LCLD Fellow, Partner at K&L Gates LLP, and President of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), recently authored an opinion piece in THE HILL Congress Blog in support of marriage equality.

Fifteen LCLD Member organizations have joined the new Out Leadership initiative. Out Leadership, a pioneering model for cross-industry senior leadership collaboration to develop forward thinking initiatives to leverage LGBT opportunities, officially launched on February 24. Out Leadership serves as a global organization that enables top executives and senior leaders in financial services, law, and insurance to come together and engage in initiatives that impact business results, develop talent, and drive LGBT equality forward. Walmart Secondment Opportunities: Legal Realty; and Merchandising, Marketing, and Supply Chain

 

Merchandising, Marketing, and Supply Chain Secondment Description:

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is seeking a seconded diverse lawyer to support the Merchandising, Marketing, and Supply Chain functions of the company's Walmart U.S. and Sam's Club Divisions. The daily work will vary greatly, but will include negotiation and drafting for sophisticated commercial transactions, general contract work, regulatory advice, marketing and advertising issues, policy interpretation, basic IP advice, limited antitrust advice, consumer complaints, inquiries from Attorneys General offices and consumer advocacy groups, and other issues impacting day-to-day operations.

Qualifications:

Minimum of five years transactional experience required. Merchandising, marketing, retail, and/or consumer products experience is helpful. The successful candidate will be a team player who can handle a fast-paced and diverse work load.

The Company will provide a $10k/month stipend and the firm would be responsible for any additional costs. Secondment will last for a total of six months at the corporate headquarters for Walmart and Sam's Club in Northwest Arkansas.

Legal Realty Department Secondment Description:

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is seeking a seconded diverse attorney to support the Legal Realty team. The daily work will vary greatly, but will include handling projects that reflect the business clients' current strategies. This position will be responsible for identifying, assessing, and managing risks and resources while promoting and supporting company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity. The attorney will supervise all aspects of complex commercial real estate transactions related to new store construction for Walmart Realty while managing outside counsel relating to same. Also, the attorney will manage entitlement and land use issues relating to commercial real estate development, environmental/hazardous materials issues, as well as federal and state environmental requirements/best management practices, reporting to a Senior Associate General Counsel for Real Estate. Attorney will also work closely with Real Estate Directors and Project Managers, and will provide advice and counsel to directors and officer-level associates within the company where necessary.

Qualifications:

Expertise of five or more years in negotiation and preparation of purchase agreements, ground leases, building leases, development agreements, easements, declarations and use restrictions, and related transactional documents is required. Team player who can handle a fast-paced and diverse work load.

Secondment will last for three months (with the possibility of extension for an additional three months if all parties agree) at the corporate headquarters located in Bentonville, Arkansas.
