On February 4 and 5, LCLD members UPS and King & Spalding teamed up to host approximately 40 Fellows for a two-day Learning Experience in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Experience began at the world headquarters of the United Parcel Service, where the Fellows were introduced to UPS through presentations that focused on UPS’s brand — one of the most recognized and respected brands in the world. Teri McClure, a former LCLD Board member and UPS’s Chief Legal, Communications and Compliance Officer, addressed the group and talked about the importance of diversity at UPS. Teri and several UPS lawyers then hosted a reception and dinner at the UPS office.

Day Two began with a visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, where the Fellows learned about the importance of diversity in Atlanta communities and heard from Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell (photo, above). Mitchell not only serves as a public official, but also as a lawyer at DLA Piper, an LCLD Member firm. After President Mitchell’s talk, the Fellows toured the King Center and were inspired by the legacy of Dr. King, who launched his ministry from the Ebenezer Baptist Church in downtown Atlanta.

Afterwards, the Fellows gathered at the offices of King & Spalding. There, they participated in programs including a panel discussion of “What it Means to be a Fellow,” moderated by 2012 Fellow Darren Jones of UPS. Panel members included Derek Harris of Carlton Fields Jorden Burt (2011), Cathy Hilton of UPS (2013), and Shaun Willie of Macy’s (2012). Each panelist shared insights on things they'd learned in the Fellows Program, and how to make the most of the experience.

Another highlight of the Learning Experience was a Speed Networking Session in which each Fellow was able to talk one-on-one with lawyers from UPS and King & Spalding. During these short but meaningful encounters, the Fellows were able to cultivate relationships, share ideas, and talk candidly about the role of diversity in the legal profession.
