COMMUNITY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS
In July, the Morris Plains Chapter of the Honeywell LGR Diversity & Inclusion Network hosted over 50 students from NJ LEEP (New Jersey Law Education & Empowerment Program), a college-prep program for teens in underserved areas. The incoming high school freshmen were provided with a full day of activities including a tour of our new global headquarters, presentations from attorneys representing various functions and participation in a fun and competitive Lean activity. The students left Honeywell inspired, with an understanding of who we are as a company; a leader in our industry and an environment that supports and encourages diversity. 2016 Fellow Katherine Ma, 2015 Fellow Yaneris Rosa, and 2014 Fellow Frances Adkins helped organize the event. Read more here.
We would love to hear more about your volunteer activities in your community. Please send a summary of your efforts to 2013 Fellow Reena Bajowala at rbajowala@jenner.com, 2015 Fellow Rafael Zahralddin at rxza@elliottgreenleaf.com, and Stephanie Uzel at suzel@lcldnet.com.
SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR LCLD FELLOWS
The Council for Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary. To commemorate that achievement, they are seeking opinions on the evolution of diversity and inclusion over the years. Please consider the questions below and provide your thoughts to one or more. Selected contributions will be published in an article with attribution to each contributing author, and an introduction by LCLD.
- Has diversity changed since you started your legal career – either in how it’s defined, how it’s discussed, or how it’s being measured? If so, how has it changed and what impact has that had? What/who has influenced the change?
- What still needs to be done? Is there anything that gives you hope that we are making progress and moving towards a more diverse legal profession?
- How have organizations like LCLD (and others) helped to diversify the legal community? Are there any organizations or initiatives that you think have been innovative in their approach to addressing issues of diversity and inclusion?
- What role do you think the Supreme Court has played in influencing diversity in the legal profession?
- Do junior lawyers view diversity differently than senior lawyers? If so, how do you think that will shape diversity and inclusion work going forward?
