On October 5-6, 2016, a record number of LCLD Members and guests came together at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago for the Seventh Annual LCLD Membership Meeting.
The theme of this year's conference was the Language of Leadership: exploring your unique power, as an LCLD Member, to communicate core values of leadership, including diversity and inclusion, and to pass down hard-earned wisdom to the next generation.

2017 1L Scholar Organization Registration

As a reminder, please register to host 1L Scholars for summer 2017 internships at your organizations by Tuesday, November 15, 2016.
The 1L LCLD Scholars Program is designed to strengthen the legal pipeline by expanding the number of opportunities for diverse first-year law students. Prior to completing an internship at your organization, the 1L Scholars will be invited to attend the 2017 1L LCLD Scholars Summit, May 23-25, 2017 in Philadelphia. This is a career-development conference designed specifically for the 1L Scholars.
For more detailed information about hiring, internship partnerships, the 1L LCLD Scholars Summit, and more, please review the Scholars Program FAQs and the Scholars Program Fact Sheet. Please note that the hiring of 1L Scholars and individual registration for the summit are two additional steps that will begin in the winter and spring, respectively.

Please submit your 2017 Fellow nomination(s) by Friday, January 13, 2017.
The Fellows Program is a one-year, multifaceted, relationship-building and leadership-training experience for diverse lawyers with 8-15 years of practice experience and demonstrated leadership potential. As LCLD's flagship program, all Fellows must be handpicked by LCLD Members themselves.
Please be sure to review the program selection criteria and fees before submitting your nomination(s). We also encourage you to review the Member Tool Kit for the Fellows Program.

2017 Pathfinder Selections

Please submit your 2017 Pathfinder selections by Friday, January 13, 2017. We're excited to announce that many 2012 1L LCLD Scholars are now employed by LCLD Member organizations and are eligible to become 2017 Pathfinders!
The goal of the Pathfinder Program is to provide early-career attorneys with practical tools for developing and leveraging internal professional networks through relationship-building skills, foundational leadership skills, and an understanding of career-development strategies applicable to both in-house and law firm practice. Law firm candidates should have three-to-five years of practice experience. In-house candidates should have three years or less of in-house experience, and less than eight total years of practice experience.
To learn more about the program and ask questions, we invite you to join us for the 2017 Pathfinder Program Informational Call (Thursday, November 3, from 4:00-5:00 pm ET).
Please be sure to review the program selection criteria and fees before submitting your selection(s). Note that you will also need to identify a Pathfinder Program Facilitator upon selecting your Pathfinder.

Do-It-Yourself Diversity at Home Depot

ATLANTA – Five times a year, Teresa Wynn Roseborough dons an orange apron, leaves her legal team behind, and spends the day assisting customers at a nearby Home Depot store. Customer service may seem removed from the usual routine of the home improvement retailer’s Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary. But it’s a mandate from the CEO that all corporate officers spend time at the top of the inverted pyramid – where customers and front line associates take priority over the corporate office.
The inverted pyramid is the foundation of The Home Depot's values-based culture. Because this exercise is such a critical part of how Home Depot does business, LCLD Fellows were invited to tag along on an early-morning store walk to kick off the August 4 Learning Experience. The latest Learning Experience was hosted at Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc., by Cynthia Gibson, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. The event took place October 17-18, 2016 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Look out for an article about the event this fall. Robert Grey, LCLD President and former President of the American Bar Association, received a Diversity Award from the ABA Forum on Construction Law’s Fall Meeting in Chicago earlier this month. The award recognized him for his “extraordinary leadership and lifetime of commitment to ‘moving the meter’ on diversity and inclusion.” Congratulations, Robert!

Katherine Adams, LCLD Member and General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Honeywell International, was profiled in Modern Counsel.
Kim Koopersmith, LCLD Member and Chair of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, spoke with Forbes about topics including law firm succession, collaboration, and diversity.
Deborah Broyles, Director of Global Diversity and Inclusion at Reed Smith LLP, passed away on September 10. She is remembered for championing diversity across the profession.
Subsequently, Reed Smith LLP announced that it has renamed its diverse scholars program to honor Deborah. The program provides $20,000 awards and summer associate positions to two law students who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to diversity and inclusion. “We wanted a visible and meaningful way to honor Deborah’s legacy and her unflagging commitment to diversity,” said Alexander Thomas, LCLD Member and Global Managing Partner.
Chris Pickett, Chief Diversity Officer at Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale P.C. and 2013 Fellow, was profiled as a Diverse Business Leader of 2016.
Adrian Thompson, Chief Diversity Officer at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP and 2011 Fellow, introduced the first annual Diversity and Inclusion Fellowship Program.
Wesley Bizzell, 2014 Fellow and Assistant General Counsel at Altria Group, Inc., spoke about ways that international companies can promote LGBT rights abroad.
Julie Engbloom, 2016 Fellow and Attorney at Lane Powell, PC, discussed LGBT inclusion at Lane Powell.
Jessica Lewis, 2016 Fellow and Trademark Counsel for The Coca-Cola Company, was profiled in Landslide, a publication of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law.
Janeen Lofton, 2016 Fellow and Attorney at Liebler, Gonzalez & Portuondo, was recognized by Secretary Clinton for her advocacy work on legal diversity at the annual convention of the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms.
Bobbie Wilson, 2013 Fellow and Partner at Perkins Coie LLP, was profiled as a Woman Leader in Tech Law in The Recorder.
