As a reminder, please register to host 1L Scholars for summer 2017 internships. The deadline has been extended to tomorrow, November 18, 2016. Click here for more information about the program, including FAQs and information about the 2017 1L LCLD Scholars Summit.
Next Steps for Registered Organizations:
Thank you for your commitment to the 2017 1L Scholars Program! The list of participating Member organizations will go live on December 1, 2016 so that law students can start applying to summer 2017 positions. As a reminder, please let Nancy Richardson know if you would like to be listed under Option A or Option B below by Monday, November 28, 2016:
OPTION A: Our organization would like to be listed as a participant in the 1L Scholars Program, but we prefer that students do not contact us regarding our available opportunities. NOTE: Member organizations that select this option will be listed separately from Member organizations that select Option B, with a clear message to students that these organizations are not soliciting applications.
OPTION B: Our organization would like LCLD to list our available opportunity for law students to apply. We will send LCLD our posting, website link, contact person, and/or any other information to which we would like students to have access.

The Fellows Program is a one-year, multifaceted, relationship-building and leadership-training experience for diverse lawyers with 8-15 years of practice experience and demonstrated leadership potential. As LCLD's flagship program, all Fellows must be handpicked by LCLD Members themselves.
Please be sure to review the program selection criteria and fees before submitting your nomination(s). We also encourage you to review the Member Tool Kit for the Fellows Program.

2017 Pathfinder Selections

Please submit your 2017 Pathfinder selections by Friday, January 13, 2017. We're excited to announce that many 2012 1L LCLD Scholars are now employed by LCLD Member organizations and are eligible to become 2017 Pathfinders!
The goal of the Pathfinder Program is to provide early-career attorneys with practical tools for developing and leveraging internal professional networks through relationship-building skills, foundational leadership skills, and an understanding of career-development strategies applicable to both in-house and law firm practice. Law firm candidates should have three-to-five years of practice experience. In-house candidates should have three years or less of in-house experience, and less than eight total years of practice experience.
Please be sure to review the program selection criteria and fees before submitting your selection(s). Note that you will also need to identify a Pathfinder Program Facilitator upon selecting your Pathfinder.

New Vision 10 Initiative Offers Career Guidance After the 1L Scholars Program

October 20, 2016—After several years in the making, DLA Piper, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, and the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) kicked off the new initiative, Vision 10: Leveraging Networks, Customizing Success, at a reception sponsored by DLA Piper and Kirkland & Ellis at Kirkland’s Washington, D.C. office.
Motivated by feedback from 1L LCLD Scholars, the organizations worked together to create Vision 10 to address the needs of this talented group of law students beyond their first year in law school. This innovative initiative provides both mentoring and networking opportunities, and is designed to support 1L Scholars in the development of critical career management skills on the road from 2L to successful practice. Additionally, the students are empowered to choose their own attorney guide from a “Board of Directors,” who they can connect with during law school and into their early careers.
During the inaugural kick-off reception, a pilot group of Washington, D.C.-based 2016 1L LCLD Scholars and a Board of Directors (eight D.C.-based DLA Piper and Kirkland & Ellis attorneys) engaged in speed networking, got to know each other face-to-face, and made plans for future gatherings. LIVE from Scripps: How Legal Leadership & TV Innovation Go Hand in Hand

More than two dozen LCLD Fellows learned about the leadership and innovation behind some of their favorite television channels at a recent Learning Experience hosted by Scripps Networks Interactive in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Scripps owns nine channels including HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, DIY Network, Cooking Channel, Great American Country, Fine Living, Asian Food Channel, and Polish media company, TVN. During the Learning Experience, the LCLD Fellows heard insights from a dozen Scripps business and legal executives including Cynthia Gibson, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer.
The Fellows certainly aren’t alone in their love of Scripps’ channels, which are broadcast to 300 million subscribers in 175 countries and 30 languages. HGTV and Food Network are among the 10 most watched cable networks among viewers aged 25-54 in the U.S. Read the full article and view photos.
The next Learning Experience will be hosted at Honeywell International by Harriet Mountcastle-Walsh, Vice President and General Counsel--Aerospace. Mark Roellig, Honorary Chair of the American Bar Association’s Diversity & Inclusion 360 Commission, General Counsel of MassMutual, and LCLD Board Member, spoke at the 2016 Legal Reform Summit about the business value of diversity.
Ivan Fong, LCLD Member and Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs, and General Counsel of 3M Company, wrote about diversity as a business value and driver of innovation, mentioning 3M's partnership with LCLD.
Andrew Glincher, LCLD Member and CEO of Nixon Peabody LLP, detailed the diversity efforts at his law firm, including a Rooney Rule for diverse hiring.
Louise Pentland, LCLD Member and Chief Business and Legal Affairs Officer at PayPal Inc., discussed the importance of pro bono work for corporate legal departments.
