LCLD Member organizations Morrison & Foerster and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton are among the top 10 firms for diversity in The American Lawyer’s latest report; Shutts & Bowen has the highest percentage of Hispanic attorneys (16.1%), and Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete has the highest percentage of African-American attorneys (9.2%). 

2. GC Diversity Mandates Had a Soft Launch—Now They’re Serious

LCLD Members Kim Rivera, Chief Legal Officer at HP Inc., and David Yawman, General Counsel at PepsiCo., along with Member organizations MetLife and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, remain at the forefront of collaborative discussions to improve diversity.

3. Why Starbucks’s Bias Training, Despite Skepticism, Is an Important Start

The New York Times, 5/28/18

“The training program will start a dialogue among some 175,000 employees. The hope is that they will continue the conversation… And if the program is well received, it could give license to other companies to wade into a historically sensitive issue,” writes Andrew Sorkin of nationwide racial bias training held by LCLD Member organization Starbucks.  

4. Number of Female Chief Executives at Fortune 500 Companies Drops by 25%

“Obstacles for female executives aren’t just because of their individual choices. There are larger forces at work, experts say, rooted in biases against women in power, mothers who work, or leaders who don’t fit the mold of the people who led before them,” writes Claire Cain Miller. 

5. How UW, Microsoft are Pitching in to Help Job-Hunters with Autism

Aiming to increase diversity and discover new talent, LCLD Member corporation Microsoft has partnered with the University of Washington to hire people with autism; the company has a specialized, week-long interview process and also trains hiring managers and co-workers on how to interact with autistic colleagues. 

6. The Different Words We Use to Describe Male and Female Leaders

The Harvard Business Review, 5/25/18

A recent study found that not only were different leadership attributes used to describe men and women, but women were assigned significantly more negative attributes than women.
