COMMUNITY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

2015 Fellow Yaneris Rosa was nominated and elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Council on Legal Education Opportunity for a three-year term. CLEO's mission is to increase the number of lawyers from diverse backgrounds that are actively contributing to the legal profession by continually expanding opportunities for persons from minority, low-income, disadvantaged, and other diverse communities to attend and graduate from law school and pass the bar examination.

As part of an effort to make everyone more comfortable talking about their community service, Jin Liu begged 2012 Fellow Cassandra Headrick to allow us to share her story with the LCLD community.

The mother of a daughter with juvenile arthritis, Cassandra is passionate about children’s health issues. She decided to celebrate her 40th birthday by running the Chicago Marathon to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) this past October. In Cassandra’s own words:

“It stinks when kids are sick. My Laney Bug has juvenile arthritis and has experienced more pain, doctor's appointments, and needle pokes than should any kid. But the kid is tough. And we are lucky. Laney's medicine is working (mostly), and after we go in every month for her infusion, we drive a half hour to home and sleep snug in our own beds. Other kids we leave behind facing variety of battles at the hospital don't get to go home so soon, and their families have to make hard choices about how to support their little ones through long stays.”

Cassandra trained for and finished the marathon while raising over $3,500 for RMHC, enough to keep a family together for almost a month. She also showed her two daughters that moms can do anything they want, especially on a milestone birthday. By the way, do not be surprised if she takes on another marathon challenge for her birthday this year!

RMHC, with locations in more than 60 countries and regions across the globe, is dedicated to helping lessen the burden of families with sick children by keeping families together during children’s hospital stays or other treatments and giving them a place to rest and refresh. Click here to learn more about RMHC.

We would love to hear more about your volunteer activities in your community. Please send a summary of your efforts to 2012 Fellow Jin Liu at jliu@cfjblaw.com and Stephanie Uzel at suzel@lcldnet.com.

SHARE YOUR SECRETS TO SUCCESS!

Do you dream of being revered for knowing the Secrets to Success? If so, here is your chance! The 2016 LCLD Scholars Summit will showcase a Secrets to Success panel, featuring LCLD Fellows, and you can be a part of the action! We need five to seven Fellows to sit on a panel discussing the truth about practice…your highs, your lows, how you survived, and your best advice for thriving.  After the panel, each Fellow will host a no-holds barred small group, ask-anything session with about 35 Scholars.  This session has always been a big hit at the Scholars Summit, and this year, it’s up to you to continue the tradition.

LCLD Scholars are diverse, rising 2L law students that have been hired by LCLD Member organizations to work for the summer. As part of the Scholars program, Scholars attend a 3-day Summit, hosted by LCLD. The LCLD Scholars Summit is May 19-21, 2016, in Chicago.  The Secrets to Success panel and breakouts are scheduled for Friday, May 20, from 1 - 4 p.m.  You are invited (but not required) to also join us for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. and for a reception that evening from 6 - 7:30 p.m.
