Mentor Registration Now Open

Attorneys at LCLD Member organizations may now register to become Mentors as part of the 2018-2019 LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program. In the fall, registered Mentors will be matched with diverse, first-year law students in major cities across the country.

Reminder: LCLD Members, Register for the Annual LCLD Membership Meeting
October 15-16, 2018, LCLD Members and their guests are invited to attend the Ninth Annual LCLD Membership Meeting* at the Mandarin Oriental Washington, D.C. On the evening of October 15, there will be a Welcome Reception at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
You may click here to register for the meeting. Please click here to book your hotel room at the Mandarin Oriental Washington, D.C. under the "LCLD Annual Meeting 2018" block rate of $425 per night, by Monday, September 17, 2018. Rooms at this rate will be available until September 17, or until the block is sold out--whichever comes first.

2018 1L Scholars Gather in Philadelphia

For enabling more than 280 1L Scholars to participate in challenging summer internships, LCLD would like to thank the 130 LCLD Member organizations and non-Member partnering organizations for hosting these up-and-coming attorneys. Click here to see the full list of participating organizations.
We'd like to extend a special thank you to Cozen O'Connor P.C., Littler Mendelson P.C., Reed Smith LLP, and Walmart Inc., which served as sponsors of the 2018 1L LCLD Scholars Summit, May 22-24, 2018 in Philadelphia. We would also like to thank the LCLD attorney volunteers who conducted the Scholars' mock interviews, which were hosted at Reed Smith. There were 238 Scholars in attendance, 150 of which participated in mock interviews.
During the summit, LCLD President Robert Grey opened the meeting, which included several small breakout sessions led by LCLD Fellows Alumni and industry experts on legal practice areas, judicial clerkships, practicing in house, and using a law degree in business and other non-practicing positions.
Additionally, Scholars had several networking opportunities and learned ways to navigate their internships and the early years of their practice, strategies for overcoming bias in the workplace, and how to engage with professionals across generations. Recent Learning Experience
On June 20, 2018, the LCLD Fellows visited the campus of Southern California Edison (SCE) for a Learning Experience hosted by LCLD Member Russell Swartz, Senior Vice President and General Counsel. LCLD Member Law Firm, Munger Tolles & Olsen LLP, hosted a Welcome Event on June 19, 2018. Look out for an article about the experience this summer.
The next Learning Experience will be hosted at The Clorox Company in San Francisco on August 9, 2018, by LCLD Board Chair Laura Stein, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Affairs.

What's Working: Communicate with Courage, Candor, and Clarity

O’Melveny & Myers LLP is working to develop a feedback culture by encouraging colleagues to give, receive, and request feedback more frequently across all levels.
Research shows that traditional feedback and evaluation processes don’t always work for women, minorities, and Millennials. O’Melveny has already begun to make changes to its performance review systems. But to have a truly sustainable impact, firm leadership aims to create a culture of feedback.
“We see this as an underpinning,” said Mary Ellen Connerty, Leader of Diversity and Engagement. “Our attorneys and staff were requesting more frequent and in-the-moment feedback, and the annual process alone wasn’t meeting their needs. We wanted to introduce a simple feedback model that everybody understood, could adopt, and that would help us all be more courageous, direct, and clear in seeking and receiving feedback.”
Working with a consultant, the firm developed a two-part training module for both attorneys and staff. The modules emphasize the importance of giving and receiving feedback in performance and career development; address some of the barriers to successful feedback; and guide people in using the Situation-Behavior-Impact (SBI) feedback model originally introduced by the Center for Creative Leadership (see above). Pathfinders and Fellows Meet Up for Compass Conversations
Nearly 130 of the 2018 Pathfinders and 80 Fellows/Alumni got together for small group networking gatherings over lunch at Compass Conversations across the country on June 5 and throughout the first week in June. There were a total of 36 Compass events in 24 cities, with two-to-three Fellows and four-to-six Pathfinders at each event.
Although many events took place at local restaurants, the following LCLD Member organizations graciously hosted events at their offices: Paul Hastings LLP in San Francisco, Shutts & Bowen LLP in Miami, and The Walt Disney Company at its Studio Lot in Burbank.

LCLD Fellows Alumni from the classes of 2011-2017 will reunite for the Seventh Annual LCLD Fellows Alumni Leadership Symposium: Visionary Leadership at the W Hollywood hotel from June 21-23, 2018.
The Fellows Alumni will learn about visionary leadership from a panel of LCLD Member general counsel, as well as a panel of Fellows Alumni who have served as presidents of diversity organizations. They will also have an opportunity to earn Ethics CLE credit for a presentation on "Beyond Mere Compliance: Identifying and Addressing Bias in the Practice of Law" by Squire Patton Boggs Partner Michael W. Kelly.
Attendees will also hear insights from Simon Tam, founder of the all-Asian American dance rock band The Slants, who helped expand freedom of speech through winning a unanimous victory at the Supreme Court of the United States for a landmark case in constitutional and trademark law (Matal v. Tam).
In addition to a community service project benefiting the Covenant House California, and various networking events, the fourth annual Rick Palmore LCLD Fellows Alumni Awards for exceptional leadership will be presented to 2016 Fellow Merisa Heu-Weller and 2011 Fellow Kassem Lucas, and the Community Service Award will be presented to the class with the highest level of participation in the Covenant House project.
